Laura Reed Debuts Her Premiere Single 'Faith Not Fear'

May 8, 2012--- This time last year, Laura Reed lost a lot. She sent an email that changed her career as she knew it. Her love relationship came to an end. She moved to Nashville, Tennessee unsure of what was in store for her. Then one day, while having a conversation with a close friend, former music executive and Grammy-winning music producer, Paul Worley, the pieces of her broken life started to come together. While sitting one evening at a grand piano, Laura had her own epiphany. What in hindsight, seemed like a disarray of baggage were actually the seeds that helped her to conceive the first single off of her upcoming album, The Awakening.

'Faith Not Fear' is a vocal offering with a vibrant message about overcoming the test and trials that all of humanity faces, but sometimes needs the encouragement to overcome. A song that Laura defines as "a kind of marching band anthem with a beat box tempo", was co-written and produced by the two-time Grammy-award winning songwriter/producer SHANNON SANDERS (India.Arie/John Legend/Pink). Shannon is also the producer for her upcoming LP.

The video, Directed/Edited by Alexander King of Synchronicity Media & Produced by
Ryan Hamblin of Brainstem Media, symbolically represents Laura's journey. "Even shooting the video itself was a 'Faith Not Fear' experience for me," says Laura. "Especially being that it's the first music video that I've ever done."

From Laura's stroll through a wooded path to her unscripted walk in some of Nashville's signature neighborhoods, this artist displays an uncanny strength and confidence, all the while ignoring the unwritten boundaries between contrasting social and economic environments. For Laura Reed, it is the perfect framework for her inspirational message---one that is more than a song; it's her testimony.

"What my own life lessons have taught me is that faith is an action word," says Laura. "It moves you forward knowing that everything works out just as it's supposed to. We all experience fear; however, we're all capable of overcoming it."

This South African-born singer/songwriter, performed globally as the front person for the now defunct Laura Reed and Deep Pocket . As an artist that has been captivating audiences for many years with her "slow-cooked soul music recipe", Laura Reed's sound and style is reminiscent of iconic music trendsetters like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and the late Amy Winehouse. Since the age of 16, Laura's music has been seasoned by influences from her background work and global travels (15 countries and three languages thus far); her delivery has hints of Samba, Reggae and African beats. Laura's musical resume is impressive, filled with a wide range of artists and genres including George Clinton, Ike Stubblefield, Jewel, and Karl Denson.

"Laura has a rare combination of gifts-musical and spiritual," states Sanders. "She reminds me that real music and real people still exist."

"I don't really have words to express how much I love Laura's music," says Worley. "It's real, it's authentic, it's what the world needs."

The first time I heard the musical stylings of Laura Reed I knew that I was destined to meet her. Luckily for us Laura recently migrated to Nashville from Atlanta for her musical Awakening. A native of South Africa, Laura spent most of her life in North Carolina. Today, I have the pleasure of hosting a first hand interview with Laura Reed and Shannon Sanders.

I arrive at Shannon Sanders’ studio, Grammy award winning producer, singer, musician and most recently, brain trust behind Laura Reed’s upcoming album, The Awakening of Laura Reed. Shannon has worked with the likes of India.Arie, John Legend, Johnny Lang, The Temptations, and many more. Laura and Shannon’s paths were met by way of Paul Worley, a renowned country record producer who had the guiding vision to unite these two explosive musical talents.

The feeling in the room is as progressive and empowering as the message behind Laura’s music. After exchanging the usual pleasantries we get right into what I came for, a sneak peak at the unreleased tracks from: The Awakening of Laura Reed. The first track that we listen to is titled “Kindness.” Booming with positive energy and a universal message to heal with kindness and not turn the other cheek. “Bomb Shelter” grooves so hard that you cant help but throw on that “stank face.” You know, the one where your face scrunches up like there is something funky in the room… and there is!

Shannon’s tracks flow so tightly and ornately with Laura’s rich, soulful voice that the music just washes over you with positivity, stripping you of all of your hatred, worry, contempt, and sadness. Laura’s voice sounds like the love child of Erykah Badu, Macy Gray, Lauryn Hill, and Amy Winehouse. Shannon’s tracks fit the songs like a well-tailored suit leaving space and adding flair in all of the right places. His prowess as a producer and a musician becomes more and more evident as I try to stop dancing, but I cannot.

We go on to listen to “Voodoo,” a track that Laura and Shannon produced in the car between Raleigh, NC and Nashville, TN using a bullet mic, headphones, and a tape adaptor. A true dance track, “Voodoo” instantly has me possessed. The song that really sticks with me the most is “Thank You,” written in the wake of a recent separation and Laura’s move to Nashville. This song is a true example of Laura’s innate ability to use smart and positive writing to express feelings and extract emotions. Unlike the usual break-up song scenario, this song aims at focusing on the aspects of failed relationships that help us grow as individuals and prepare us for the next steps in our lives.

All of the elements of this project are beginning to come together for me. Influences from soul, hip hip, R&B, and Latin all form a homogeneous mixture that could stimulate the hearts, minds, and ears of virtually any listener. At this juncture Shannon explains to me that one of the biggest aspects of the album is that the songs stand up without the track. Shannon sits down at the Wurlitzer to demonstrate and starts plugging on “Thank You” as Laura comes in next to me on the couch filling the room with her robust, yet silky, smooth voice. They transition through “Bomb Shelter” and “Faith Not Fear” and on and on until it shines as clear as the summer sun that Laura is a force, not only on the track, but also in her own element.

IMR: “I understand that you grew up a bit it South Africa?”

Laura: “Yeah. Actually my mom is from Johannesburg and my dad is from Nashville, but I have spent most of my life in North Carolina.”

IMR: “Talk about full circle! I am also told that you “speak multiple languages and have done a substantial amount of travelling?

Laura: “Yes. I have travelled and performed in 17 different countries and I speak Spanish, Portuguese, and English.”

IMR: “Does this ever translate into your music?”

Laura: “Definitely. I think that the variety and style of my music is a product of all of the environments that I have experienced. We are also thinking about doing a world EP after the initial release that will showcase some different variations of the tracks musically and linguistically.”

IMR: “Did you grow up around a lot of music?”

Laura: “I didn’t have any musicians in my family but I come from a long line of writers. My grandfather was a renowned poet and both of my parents write as well. I think that has a lot to do with my poetic style of writing.”

IMR: “How does this album and this collaboration differ from your former pursuits?”

Laura: “Well, I am doing the music now that I have wanted to do my entire life. Working with Shannon has brought me to the next level because I really feel like he gets me musically.”

Shannon: “Yeah, its like she was raw when she got to Nashville, like a piece of lumber. What we have been doing here is carving into that raw wood and adding more and more detail every day.”

IMR: “I understand that you had a recent separation from a label that you were working with in Atlanta.

Laura: ”Yeah. Things just didn’t work out. I was really just “rapper bait.” You know, these guys would just have me sing on hooks for their various projects and I never really got the chance to develop as an artist.”

IMR: “Wow. That must have been difficult but I am sure that it was a learning experience and you were involved in some cool music.”

Laura: “Of course. I got to be on some really cool projects including a track produced by Kanye West.”

IMR: “So what are we going to call the album and when do you expect it to be out?”

Laura: “The album will be out in the late Spring and we are calling it The Awakening of Laura Reed as of now, but I will let you know if I go back to sleep…”
